More About This Course
According to a myth, two of the most important rules were written on the walls of the temple at the holy site of Delphi in Ancient Greece. They were NOTHING IN EXCESS and KNOW THYSELF.
This course will look at the second commandment to find out what self-knowledge is, why it might be useful, and what, if any, limits it might have. What does a person who doesn’t know herself lack that makes her less wise, good, or skilled in some ways than others who do know themselves, and what, if anything, could she do to fill that gap? Our investigation will be based on both historical sources and recent research in philosophy, experimental social psychology, and neuroscience. During our investigation, we will become students of our own dreams and learn how to meditate.
Results of Learning:
Learners will get to know some of the most important ideas from Western, classical Chinese, and Buddhist ways of understanding ourselves. In the process, they will realize how self-knowledge relates to wisdom, how necessary intellectual humility is, and how there are ways to learn about yourself that don’t involve introspection.
Learners will also become familiar with current research in experimental social psychology, philosophy, and neuroscience about emotions, the unconscious, the role of affect in decision-making, and self-deception. They will also understand how the Buddhist tradition challenges the idea of a coherent, unified self.
The University of Edinburgh and the Humility & Conviction and Public Life Project, an engaged research project at the University of Connecticut that was made possible by a generous grant from the John Templeton Foundation, worked together to make this course.
